Part of the book series: Advances in Behavioral Biology ((ABBI,volume 30))

Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a major mental health problem which will reach epidemic proportions as the percentage of elderly in the population increases. Three to four percent of the population of the United States above age 65 are estimated to be afflicted by this progressive dementia (31, 52), for which at present neither treatment nor definitive antemortem diagnostic tests exist. As current research elucidates the neurochemical and histologic changes that characterize AD, biologic markers useful in diagnosis and rational treatments may be developed.
