Picosecond Time Domain Spectroscopy of Structure and Dynamics in Nucleic Acids

  • Chapter
Structure and Dynamics of RNA

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 110))

Abstract

The generation of laser pulses in the picosecond and recently in the femtosecond time domain (Auston and Eisenthal, 1984) has made possible studies of vibrational and rotational modes as well as of short lived excited states in nucleotides and nucleic acids. With the tunability of dye lasers selective excitation of purines and pyrimidines is available and information on the distribution and dynamics of conformational states as well as on internal motions of nucleic acid chains and individual nucleotides can be obtained.
