Abstract

There are three known genes that code for enkephalin-containing (EC) peptides (Udenfriend and Kilpatrick, 1983). The one coding for proenkephalin is expressed in many tissues. Having characterized many of the proenkephalin products and developed methods for their assay (Udenfriend et al., 1983), and having cloned bovine (Gubler et al., 1982) and rat (Howells et al., 1984) proenkephalin cDNA, we had the tools to investigate the biology of this EC peptide precursor.
