The Potential Effectiveness and Safety of Second Generation Vaccines

Several times during this symposium on Immunological Approaches to Contraception and Promotion of Fertility, reference has been made to second generation vaccines (Talwar, 1985). A characteristic of these vaccines is that they simultaneously attack more than one vulnerable site. Intuitively it seems obvious that such a strategy should result in greater efficiency of the vaccine. The magnitude of the gain in efficiency to be expected is less obvious because it will be strongly influenced by the correlations between the effects of the different components.
