Abstract

Alzheimer disease (AD) is an early onset dementia (patient under the age of 65 at the time of onset) characterized clinically by an initial loss of memory for recent events, with a later deterioration of cognition, memory and personality (Katzman, 1976; Terry & Davies, 1980; Wiskniewski & Iqbal, 1980). At a gross anatomical level, the brains of patients with AD are generally smaller than those of controls and usually show atrophy of the temporal and frontal lobes. At a histological level, the disorder is characterized by the presence of plaques, consisting of abnormal neurites associated with extracellular amyloid (Wisniewski & Terry, 1976; Tomlinson, 1982) and neurofibrillary tangles, comprised of paired helical filaments, which are concentrated in the perikarya (cell bodies) of neurones (Kidd, 1963; Tomlinson, 1982).
