Abstract
Prolactin exerts a variety of effects on a number of tissues, most notably the liver, mammary gland, adrenal, kidney and gonads. Our studies have been concerned with the lactogenic receptors of the pig and sheep corpus luteum. Following the rupture of the preovulatory follicle and shedding of the oocyte at ovulation, the remaining follicle cells rapidly differentiate and hypertrophy. The corpus luteum gland so formed secretes large amounts of progesterone, which transforms the oestrogen-primed endometrium to the secretory state necessary for implantation of an embryo.
