Abstract
The rapid development of molecular genetic technology in the past decade has opened up exciting new vistas for the application of this technology to the manufacture of important biological molecules, as well as to the diagnosis and treatment of inherited diseases. The enthusiasm attending this development in the research laboratories of universities and medical schools generated an equal stir in the corporate world, where the possibilities for commercial exploitation of these dramatic scientific advances were immediately appreciated.
