Abstract
Research into the morphological and biomechanical variability of a population requires an adequate data base. Although there are no serious technical or theoretical problems connected with establishing such a data base, the data available for most Western nations are sparse and unsatisfactory; the male and female working population is particularly poorly represented. The Federal Republic of Germany is an exception, as data are available for a sample of over 40.000 people, that may be considered to be representative of the entire population with respect to regional and social factors. The sample was taken and evaluated according to standardized methods and formed the basis of DIN 33 402. This research was carried out by or in close collaboration with the Anthropological Institute of the University of Kiel.
