Abstract
Cerebral metabolism and blood flow have frequently been examined in intact animals. An isolated brain preparation, however, offers essential advantages since the activity of the organ is not affected by secondary peripheral actions such as cardiovascular or respiratory effects or liver and muscle metabolism. Furthermore, a perfusion medium can be used permitting an absolute control of the arterial supply to the brain.
