Abstract
Over many lifetimes, building on the concepts of languages, alphabets, and numbers, media have been developed to permit the transfer of information for professional, commercial, industrial, and personal purposes. In this process, they have increased capabilities, affected social values, and modified society. Because the development of media is one of evolution and replacement, this chapter begins with a concise overview of existing record and real-time media. It then describes the new telecommunication media which provide opportunities to retrieve information, exchange messages, and conference in various ways, and discusses their applications and implementations. A final section addresses the question of other telecommunication media.
