Abstract
The evidence from laboratory, clinical, and epidemiological studies that diet affects immune function is compelling, although precise recommendations of dietary choices for optimum health and longevity cannot yet be stated. In part, this situation results from complex and sometimes contradictory data. Some of reasons for these difficulties may be summarized as follows.

Results obtained in vitro must be related to conditions which apply in vivo.

2.
Data from uncontrolled studies on out bred animals (i.e., humans) must be compared to those obtained from controlled studies on defined strains.

3.
Direct dietary effects on immunity are difficult to separate from the indirect effects of increased infection, which often accompanies malnutrition.

4.
Effects on immune response are often delayed.

5.
The immune system is complex and several components may be affected by a single dietary stimulus.
