Abstract

The birth of any infant is a developmental crisis for the family. Parents usually anticipate the birth of an infant with excitement and respond to the event with positive growth and development. Nevertheless, even under the best of circumstances, the birth of a child, and particularly of the first in a family, means that new sets of relationships are established, relationships which alter the preexisting family or husband–wife equilibrium.
