Abstract
About a decade ago I wrote a newspaper column in which I argued that almost everything that is pleasurable to people turns out to be bad for them. In support of this half serious thesis, I cited data that smoking is always harmful and that even moderately excessive eating or drinking was also unhealthy. The commonest rejoinder to my cynicism was that I was forgetting that there was one pleasure that could be indulged in with impunity, sex. In an era when effective and presumably safe contraceptive devices were available and venereal diseases seemed to be conquered, this was an effective argument.
