Abstract
Hematoporphyrin IX (Hp, Fig. 1a) and especially the related product known as “Hematoporphyrin Derivative or HpD” have been the most used compounds in tumor diagnostic and phototherapy as outlined during this symposium. Also, hematoporphyrin is one of the most common photosensitizer. This situation is disquieting because of the general uncertainty about the purity of hematoporphyrin1 The major impurities of the commercial product are 8(3)-(1-hydro-xyethyl)-3(8)-vinyldeuteroporphyrin (HVD, 2 isomers, Fig. 1b), protoporphyrin (PP, Fig. 1c) and unidentified brown impurities.
