Abstract
The initiation of follicular development is a continuous process which occurs throughout the menstrual cycle. At the beginning of a new cycle (or in the last few days of the previous cycle) a cohort of those follicles beginning development are recruited to further development by rising levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). These follicles grow to the antral stage and require the continued availability of FSH and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) for further growth and maturation, culminating in ovulation (Fritz and Speroff, 1982). Usually one follicle (seldom more) escapes atresia and is selected to become the dominant, preovulatory follicle (Hodgen, 1982; Chapter 5.) This natural sequence of events is sub-optimal for IVF-ET. The development of multiple preovulatory follicles increases the probability of recovering at least one fertilizable oocyte by laparoscopy (Edwards et al., 1980; Jones et al., 1982).
