Suppressive Effect of Mannitol Upon Cerebral Infarct Formation — an Electron Microscopical Investigation

  • Chapter
Recent Progress in the Study and Therapy of Brain Edema

Abstract

We have previously reported that mannitol prevents thalamic infarction, using an experimental model developed in dogs10,16. in this report we present sequential electron microscopical observations of brain tissue of animals with thalamic infarction, with and without mannitol. The purpose was to analyze the effect of mannitol on the formation of cerebral infarction, particularly on the early pathological changes.
