Abstract
An obscure but often repeated assertion that is fashionable in antinuclear circles is that the use of nuclear energy would lead to a suppression of civil liberties in the U.S. The apparent relationship is that nuclear materials could be stolen, and nuclear systems sabotaged, and that in the minds of the accusers only a police state could effectively protect against these possibilities.
