Abstract

It has been almost two decades since the discovery that tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors were clinically effective in the treatment of depression. In spite of intensive investigations, neither the mo lecular mechanisms whereby antidepressants operate nor the etiology of this disease is well understood. The knowledge that reserpine, which depletes monoamine stores,1,2 can induce a depressed mood 3 has stimulated speculation on a causal relationship between a defect in monoaminergic transmission and endogenous depression.
