Abstract

The prospect of manipulating nitrogen-fixing systems so as to reduce the demand for nitrogenous fertiliser in agriculture is frequently discussed in the context of plant genetic engineering. Klebsiella pneumoniae has become the model system for analysis of genetic and biochemical control of nitrogen fixation and a detailed understanding of the genetic control systems which regulate the nif regulon in K. pneumoniae is of considerable importance for future genetic manipulation of this complex gene cluster.
