Abstract
An early example of the use of the epidemiologic method to assess psychophysiological factors in mortality rates was that of William Ferr (27). In 1837 Ferr was impressed by the fact that the state of imprisonment had an inexplicably deleterious effect upon inmates’ mortality rates.
