Abstract

Motility is what characterizes the dynamics of living cells and organisms with autonomous motion. Such are flagellated bacteria and spermatozoa which thus can be assigned a velocity. Objects without locomotion apparatus or cells whose apparatus machinery has been inhibited merely undergo Brownian motion. The mobility of Brownian systems is characterized by their diffusion coefficient.
