Abstract

Studies of interactions between neurotransmitters and their receptors would be greatly facilitated by a method to obtain cell fractions enriched with cells that contain a high density of receptors specific for the neurotransmitter. Here we report the use of a fluorescence activated cell sorter to prepare fractions of pituitary cells that contain a high density of high affinity, specific receptors for the decapeptide, luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH). Since no enzymatic procedures are employed, the dispersed cells permit both binding and biological responses to be analysed immediately without requiring the usual time of 16–48hr for recovery.
