Abstract
Development of delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) in Salmonella infection was reported as early as 1923, when Zinsser showed that guinea pigs injected with live typhoid bacilli became skin test positive to typhoid antigen (1). A close relationship between DTH and immunity to Salmonella infection was demonstrated in mice by Collins and Mackaness (2). They showed that mice immunized with live Salmonella developed DTH as measured by an increase in footpad thickness 24 hours after injection of a culture supernatant antigen. The appearance of footpad responsiveness correlated with the onset of immunity to challenge with virulent Salmonella (2).
