Abstract
At Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI), long experience in the management of tumors with hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) photoradiation therapy (PRT) has documented the destruction of a wide range of neoplasms with remarkable regularity (1,2). The surrounding inflammatory response and eschar that formed at the site of the tumor nodule indicated that some damage to normal adjacent tissue occurred. In an attempt to evaluate the potential for HPD PRT in the abdomen, we carried out preclinical trial of the tolerance of normal intra-abdominal viscera, and of that containing an implanted Brown-Pearce tumor, in rabbits. For an assay in a primate system, three baboons were studied. Lessons learned from animal trials have recently been applied toward the management of intra-abdominal human neoplasia.
