Abstract

Experimental evidence is accumulating to suggest that macrophages can kill tubercle bacilli by producing hydrogen peroxide. For example, among strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis virulence correlates with hydrogen peroxide resistance (1,2) and peroxide-susceptible mutants are killed more readily than parent strains in the lungs of guinea-pigs, particularly when the availability of peroxide from macrophages increases with the onset of acquired immunity (3,4). Furthermore, killing of Mycobacterium microti by immunologically-activated mouse peritoneal macrophages is prevented by exogenous catalase (5). This study characterizes hydrogen peroxide release from guinea-pig alveolar macrophages during phagocytosis of Mycobacterium bovis BCG.
