Abstract

Psychologists, including clinical psychologists, have traditionally felt that the use of punishment should be discouraged. This opinion was fostered on the basis of three professional beliefs about punishment. In the first place, punishment was thought to have only a temporary suppressive effect on behavior and could thus be considered of little use to parents or therapists who wished to make a lasting impact. Second, punishment was thought to provide a model for future aggressive behavior by the recipient. Finally, as detailed later in this chapter, punishment was regarded as the source of many problems brought to the clinician, including (according to some theoretical accounts) stuttering, impulsive behavior, and even schizophrenia.
