Ferromagnetism in Linear Chains

Abstract

Recent years have seen an intense interest on the part of inorganic chemists in magneto-structural correlations in transition-metal salts, particularly cluster systems. This is evidenced by the large fraction of papers in journals like Inorganic Chemistry which deal in one way or another with magnetic interactions between metal ions. A similar interest has been displayed by the solid-state physics community in low-dimensional magnetic materials. Scanning the papers presented at the International Conference on Magnetism in Munich, September 1979 (J. Magn. Magn. Mater., volumes 15–18) verifies this. Thus, the synthesis and analysis of low-dimensional magnetic systems is an area of strong, common interest to both physicists and chemists. The combination of spin dimensionality, spatial dimensionality, and spin quantum number leads to a large magnetic “zoo” for which theoretical models and physical realizations must be found.
