Initiation Factor/mRNA Interactions and mRNA Recognition

  • Chapter
Protein Biosynthesis in Eukaryotes

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((NSSA,volume 41))

Abstract

The recognition of mRNA and its binding to ribosomes are generally considered to be of key importance to translational control. That is, the decision whether a given mRNA species will be translated during cell growth, differentiation or virus infection is largely determined at initiation. Once bound to ribosomes, the mRNA will generally be translated completely, as polypeptide chain extension and completion ordinarily do not limit protein synthesis.
