Abstract

Cytochrome oxidase (EC 1.9.3.1) is the terminal oxidoreduction complex of the respiratory chain It is located in the inner mitochondrial membrane, and is also found in the cell membrane of some bacteria. Cytochrome oxidase catalyzes the reduction of O2 to water by electrons donated by cytochrome c. It also conserves a large fraction of the free energy liberated in the redox reaction for subsequent synthesis of ATP. The cytochrome oxidase segment of the respiratory chain has indeed traditionally been called the “third site,” or simply “Site 3,” of oxidative phosphorylation.
