Infrared Reflection Absorption and Emission Study of Methyl Alcohol Adsorption on MoO3 Films

  • Chapter
Vibrations at Surfaces

Abstract

The adsorption of methyl alcohol on well oriented MoO3 films has been investigated with infrared reflection absorption and emission spectroscopies. Methyl alcohol adsorbs dissociatively to produce methoxy species at 100 K.

The band at 1045 cm−1 was attributed to the C-O stretching vibration of chemisorbed methoxy species. A similar band was dectected at higher frequency, 1065 cm−1, above room temperatures and under high exposure of gaseous methanol. The C-O bond in the latter species has some of its double bond character.
