Desorption by Resonant Multiphoton Excitation of Internal Adsorbate Vibration

  • Chapter
Vibrations at Surfaces

Abstract

Infrared laser induced desorption by resonant excitation of internal adsorbate vibration is demonstrated. Fast desorption takes place at low fluences D < 0.1 J cm−2 by multiphoton absorption from TEA CO2 laser pulses in CH3F-NaCl. Desorption yield versus excitation frequency and Φ versus fluence plots as well as linear absorption spectra are presented. Considering localized and nonlocalized excitation a model of unimolecular desorption induced by monochromatic infrared is presented and found to be in concert with first experiments. The apparatus with the ultra high vacuum cryostat developed is described briefly.
