Molecular Mechanisms of the Control of Cell Growth in Cancer

  • Chapter
Cell Growth

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((NSSA,volume 38))

Abstract

Most cells in vivo are in a quiescent state. They metabolize and perform various functions. In adults they do not generally divide unless they are to be replaced. Some cells practically never divide (brain cells) or are terminally differentiated and cannot divide (red cells). Others divide quite frequently (skin, intestine, bone marrow cells); some divide after an insult such as wounding. Cells thus contain regulatory mechanisms that control their capacity to divide.
