Abstract

Culture, a complex and highly abstract concept, does not have the same direct basis in reality as does a rock, a cloud, or sound. It is based upon a myriad of notions which are often in themselves abstract or even vague, such as norms and attitudes. Researchers concerned with cultural matters often expand or contract the meaning of culture to fit their own methods and purposes, just as psychiatrists and “alcohologists” do in the study of psychiatric disorder and alcoholism.
