Abstract
With a complex, poorly understood disorder such as alcoholism, etiological insights and treatment strategies may be generated by identifying another frequently associated illness. If temporal sequence can be defined, then causal or precipitating roles of one disorder in relation to the other may be suggested. Since alcoholism and other psychiatric disorders all have unclear etiologies, analysis of their association may prove fruitful. Understandably, the clinician would be most enthusiastic if alcoholism were found related to a psychiatric disorder (Axis I diagnosis)1 rather than a personality disorder (Axis II diagnosis)1, since the latter are resistant to change. It would be particularly helpful if the psychiatric disorder is one known to be responsive to a specific treatment or to preventive intervention.
