Abstract

Mammalian fertilization, confined as it is to the nurturing lumen of the oviduct, is inaccessible to sequential scrutiny. Through in vitro fertilization, observations can now be carried out at the laboratory bench. The contributions to this volume have provided a comprehensive review of the physiological and biochemical events associated with fertilization, as observed in vitro. Techniques developed for in vitro fertilization and embryo culture have also received concentrated attention. Developed largely through trial and error over years, these are now established as practical laboratory tools for the evaluation of the events that occur early in reproduction.
