Critical Review of Embryo Transfer Procedures with Cattle

  • Chapter

Abstract

More offspring have resulted from transferring bovine embryos than from embryos of all other species combined. Recent survey data from North America indicate that at least 17,000 bovine pregnancies were produced commercially in 1979 at a cost of about $20,000,000 (Seidel, 1981). It is estimated that more than 50,000 bovine embryos were transferred worldwide in 1980, and probably 25,000 calves will result. Although the first successful bovine embryo transfer was reported in 1951 (Willett et al., 1951), there was no commercial application until the early 1970s.
