Abstract

In order to understand and develop materials, some material scientists are striving to establish interrelations between fabrication, composition (or phase equilibria), microstructure and properties. Knowledge of these interrelations leads to the anticipation of engineering problems in using the material and to the routes to material improvement. Important interrelations have been uncovered for the family of silicon nitride alloys fabricated with a densification aid. These interrelations will be the subject of this review; interrelation between composition and properties will be emphasized.
