The Modular Target Transportation and Storage Facility, VAC

  • Chapter
Preparation of Nuclear Targets for Particle Accelerators

Abstract

Extensive use of external accelerator facilities has emphasized the need for a safe and handy target transportation container. The present paper describes a portable vacuum container 45 mm high and 95 mm in diameter with capacity for twelve 20 × 25 mm target frames. During transportation the container can maintain a vacuum better than.1 torr for 24 hours and below 1 torr for a week. The container is adaptable to a central pumping station where long time storage in the laboratory takes place at 10-6 torr. Each one of the 10 containers connected to this station can be removed or pumped out without breaking the vacuum of the others.
