Some Reflections on Energy Gaps in Amorphous As2Se3 and As2S3

  • Chapter
Recent Developments in Condensed Matter Physics

Abstract

Measurements of interband Faraday Rotation (F.R.) in amorphous As2Se3 are reported. From theoretical formulae for F.R. as a function of the photon energy an energy gap of 2.3 eV is determined. This gap is compared with gaps obtained with other methods : optical absorption usually gives a value of 1.8 eV but a formula for “direct” transitions, applied to the region of high absorption, confirms the F.R. result. Similar data are also found for As2S3 where the two gaps are about 2.4 and 3.1 eV.
