Abstract
The mammalian organism possesses extremely efficient mechamisms for the catabolism of PGs and hence their biological inactivation. The effeciency of certain vascular beds — for example, the lung — in inactivating PGs is well illustrated by the observations of Ferreira and Vane (18), who found that more than 95% of infused PGE2 was inactivated during one circulation through the lungs and by those of Hamberg and Samuelsson (26), who showed that only 3% of an intravenous bolus injection of tritiated PGE2 remained in the plasma after 90 s. After 4.5 min there was no detectable PGE2 at all.
