On Interrelation of Fracture Mechanisms of Metals and Acoustic Emission

  • Chapter

Abstract

A new method of nondestructive testing based on application of acoustic emission is discussed. The degree of correlation between AE characteristics variation, loading level and plastic deformation growth in materials during mechanical testing has been investigated. AE characteristics variation allows one to specify the intensity of local plastic deformations and to determine crack onset time. The AE method under consideration enables one to monitor the damage accumulation intensity in structural components when estimating their carrying capacity. All tests were conducted on both flat rod and single-edge notched specimens machined from different structural materials within a wide range of temperatures and deformation rates.
