Abstract
Cerebral ischemia leads to a postischemic modification of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability to substances which under normal conditions do not easily cross the BBB. The BBB change appeared to be selective since the leakage of various molecules tested was related to their size and/or their specific transport system (2, 12, 13). A distinct alteration of BBB permeability has also been observed for the monoamines (4). The enhanced passage of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) occurred prior to that of norepinephrine (NE) in gerbils subjected to bilateral common carotid artery occlusion and release (2).
