Abstract

Although luteinizing-hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) can induce ovulation in the animal (Schally and Arimura, 1977) and in some cases in the human (Nillius, 1976), it has recently been demonstrated that this hypothalamic hormone, as well as potent agonistic analogues, have antifertility effects in the animal. The administration of LH-RH or its agonistic analogue [D-Ala6,des-Gly-NH2 10] LH-RH ethylamide on diestrus I or II in normal female rats has been shown to delay the expected day of mating and vaginal cornification (Banik and Givner, 1975; Beattie and Corbin, 1977; Ferland et al.,1978; Kledzik et al.,1978a). Gonado-tropin-releasing peptides also have potent postcoital contraceptive activity in female rats (Corbin et al.,1976; Humphrey et al.,1976; Kledzik et al., 1978b) and rabbits (Hilliard et al., 1976).
