Sensitivity of Pituitary Gonadotropic Cells and Gonads to Hormones

  • Chapter
Reproductive Processes and Contraception

Part of the book series: Biochemical Endocrinology ((BIOEND))

Abstract

Previous articles dealt briefly with the considerations of pituitary-cell specificity, the hypothalamic—pituitary—gonadal axis, and gonadal steroids (Pantić975, 1980). There is no doubt that gonadotropic cells are one of the sites in the feedback effect of gonadal steroids and that estrogen (E) has the key role in the regulation of nervous and pituitary-cell activities. To contribute to further discussions related to the sensitivity of pituitary cells to gonadotropic-releasing hormone (GRH), gonadotropic hormone (GTH), and the gonadal steroids, an attempt is made also to summarize our data and recent other data closely connected with the role of various hormones in the differentiation and fate of genetically programmed oocytes in developing ovaries and of spermatogonia and Sertoli cells in developing testes.
