Regulation of LH-RH Secretion by Gonadal Steroids and Catecholamines

Part of the book series: Biochemical Endocrinology ((BIOEND))

Abstract

The presence of a hypothalamic factor that stimulates the release of pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH) was demonstrated two decades ago (McCann et al., 1960). A great deal of effort was directed toward the purification and chemical identification of the hypothalamic LH-releasing hormone (LH-RH). Matsuo et al. (1971) characterized the chemical structure of the naturally occurring LH-RH and showed it to be biologically and chemically identical with the synthetic decapeptide. Antibodies against the synthetic decapeptide were produced for the radioimmunoassay of LH-RH in tissue and body fluids (Nett et al.,1973). Recently, the distribution of the LH-RH neuronal network in the brain has been investigated by a variety of techniques including bioassay and radioimmunoassay and by immunocytochemical means (Naik, 1975; Elde and Hökfelt, 1978; Hoffman et al., 1978; Sétáló et al., 1978).
