Abstract
Rapidly changing societies are resulting in increasingly stressful situations for their populations, and are accentuating the inevitably stressful transitions which take place during the life span of each person. Changes which occur on a societal scale, or on a global scale, disrupt the interpersonal bonds and the institutional supports which provide the foundations for the development of individual participation in the community. The theme of our argument is that the challenge of modern adaptation lies not only in the individual learning of coping skills, but also in the functioning of societal arrangements for preserving and recreating institutions which ameliorate the management of life tasks.
