Impediography Revisited

Acoustical Imaging

Part of the book series: Acoustical Imaging ((ACIM,volume 9))

Abstract

Ultrasound pulse-echo scanning relies on the interaction of a propagating pulse with scattering centers with in tissue. The measurement of echo return-time (back-scattering) may give a quite accurate picture of the location of scattering centers, but no further information. Grey-scale imaging extends the technique and provides, in addition, some knowledge of the strength, but little about the type, of scattering center. B-mode imaging may thus be seen as a crude “reconstruction” technique and, because of its impressive diagnostic usefulness, the natural question arises as to whether other techniques may provide further, and possibly even more valuable, information about the scattering interaction sites.
