Abstract
Recent results obtained for lubricating oils containing polymer additives will be described. Pressure distributions measured in a Truncated-Cone & Plate apparatus yield values for N3 = N1 + 2N2. The SEISCOR/Lodge Stressmeter, a new slit-die apparatus, yields values for hole pressure P, wall shear stress σ, and wall shear rate s. According to the Higashitani-Pritchard-Baird theory, Nl - N2 = 3 dP/dσ. N1 and N2 denote the first and second normal stress differences in unidirectional shear flow.
