Abstract
The complex mechanical behaviour and the underlying phenomena are discussed for solid-in-liquid suspensions. Although hydrodynamic effects and simple viscous behaviour are included, the emphasis is on the more complex behaviour. Therefore attention is focused on colloidal dispersions. Possible responses are enumerated, and models are given for the corresponding constitutive equations. Stable dispersions are used to review the possible effects of the various forces. Flocculated systems illustrate the intricacy of dispersion rheology. The generalized Newtonian flow and the visco-elastic response are considered in relation to the variable inter-particle structure.
