Abstract
Essential hypertension develops with age, and its complication, arteriosclerosis, seems to be an accelerated form of aging process in blood vessels. With advancing age, the blood vessels lose elasticity and become stiff. This may be due in part to an increase in vascular connective tissue components. Special attention will be given in this report to the cardiovascular connective tissue and especially to the fibrils of collagen, which is known to be the major protein of connective tissue. The experiments were undertaken to elucidate an interrelationship between hypertension and vascular collagen metabolism. This report is a summary of experiments conducted during the past several years.
